This is one of those stories that will just give you chills; a series of events that align the right people at the right time. We are incredibly thankful that Michele's story had a happy ending and dread to think how this situation might have ended differently.
Michele Hargrove, USIC Locate Technician, was traveling a South Carolina interstate when she witnessed a woman being violently assaulted by a man. She immediately stopped and called the police. The attacker ran into the woods but was shortly apprehended and arrested by the police. The woman was injured during the incident, but her baby was safe. Michele's interference undoubtedly prevented the situation from escalating further.
USIC technicians are challenged daily to implement safety in three key areas: Infrastructure, Our Communities, & Ourselves. They positively impact their work environments, by design. As infrequently as our technicians witness violent crimes, Michele's actions were nothing shy of heroic, to stop a violent attack against this woman, and potentially, her child.
Our field technicians don't just work in your community - they live there, too. They have a shared interest in overall safety and well-being. If you catch a USIC field technician doing something great in your neighborhood, we would love to hear about it!
