See Something, Say Something

USIC technicians are trained to identify and avoid any number of dangers in wooded areas. Trees and brush are full of ticks, snakes and tripping hazards - but occasionally they come across something more sinister. Nick Jones, a USIC locate technician, shared the following scenario with his team:

"This morning while doing locates...we discovered a 3-phase transformer that had fallen into its fiberglass pad. Although it was in a brushy area that does not have a lot of pedestrian traffic around, it's still an extremely dangerous situation that needs to be reported."

Nick immediately contacted the utility owner to report the problem and warned teammates that, "Everyone should have the emergency number for local utilities."

USIC technicians are challenged daily to implement safety in three key areas: Infrastructure, Our Communities, & Ourselves. They positively impact their work environments, by design, and we are proud to share stories like Nick's with the communities they serve.

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) identifies, "Recognized safe work procedures were not implemented or were not followed," as one of the Top 5 causes of workplace electrocutions. USIC technicians are empowered to "Stop Work" to evaluate, report and/or resolve safety hazards on all jobsites.
